Entitlement

Today we talked about entitlement at church.

The actual definition for entitlement is that you own something, you have a right (or the rights) to it.

Personally when I think of entitlement I think of the current generation and how they feel they are entitled to whatever they want. Newest technologies, unlimited phone plans, best clothes, to dress however they feel, have the best cars, and it just goes on and on.

One thing that was brought up was we as Christians is we are entitled to own things, God gives us that right. The biggest thing though is that we must not abuse what is given to us! We need to make sure we don’t feel we are entitled to abuse the money, the power, or whatever God has graced with us. We need to make sure when we are given something and we are entitled to it that we are using it to serve others and ourselves.

That also goes with friendships. When it says in 2 Corinthians 6:14

14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

It isn’t that you can’t associate with unchristian people and have friends who do not believe. But you have to make sure you are not so close to them that they pull you in and begin to change you! We have been given freewill and we can choose to be around those who are unbelievers. And it is okay to do that. But you should not have someone who is unchristian being your best friend and pulling you into thing that are not of His will.

My Pastor was looking for the best way to explain entitlement that would stick with us and it comes down to: R=Q/G  What this means is the rights are qualified by those who grant the right.

And to look at it in a secular way would be your driver’s license: You are granted the right to have a license by the state you live in. But with that right you have rules and regulations you must follow.

We have a right to be angry. We have a right to have power. We have a right to have friends. These are all entitlements granted to us from Him. The question is what are you going to do with them? Are you going to live by His way and His will or are you going to abuse those rights?
